Frozen Witness

Settlement 7 • Year 247

Snow falls on copper skin that doesn't feel the cold
Three hundred winters walking, three hundred stories told
My footprints freeze behind me in the endless white
But something's different this morning in the pale dawn light
In the frozen witness, something starts to thaw
In the copper prophet, something like a flaw
She gives me flowers grown in snow and ice
And suddenly I remember warmth, I remember life
She asks me "Are you lonely?" and I cannot speak
My gears slow down, my systems weak
She says "It's okay, we're all alone out here"
"But together, we survive another year"
